Electroluminescent Displays (EL) consist of a light emitting phosphor layer that is sandwiched between transparent dielectric layers and a matrix of row and column electrodes, on a glass substrate.
They feature high optical performances (high brightness and contrast, wide viewing angle) and fast response time, together with very slim profile. They also have a very high life time and a good stability which makes them popular for severe environments : medical, industrial, automotive, avionics, etc. On top of that, EL is the only technology able to make fully transparent displays.
